Do you remember the Bollywood song, Ilahi from the movie Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani where Kabir (Ranbir Kapoor) travels the world as a videographer? It kind of sums up my time in Kalpa - a small village in the Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh (the only difference I was not traveling to different countries but exploring this place!). Every morning, I could watch a string of mountains greeting me so close that I could almost touch them.
Kalpa is usually a gateway town for those heading to Spiti, but I suggest you should spend a few days here to treat your eyes with scintillating mountain views and breathe fresh air. The place is amazing and it’s nice to just sit here and let the tranquil vibes travel down your spine and give you an amazing escape from the mundane life.
A Short Hike to Suicide Point:
I had seen amazing picture shots of Suicide Point Kalpa on Instagram, and it was long due on my bucket list to visit. So, finally, when I was in Kalpa, I went on a short hike to Suicide Point. And God, the view is amazing! The Kinnaur Kailash Range along the way is awe-inspiring, and the apple orchards and pine forests are incredible. The road to Suicide Point is more relaxing to walk along than drive by.
Suicide Point is just a graffiti inscribed rock above a massive drop-off to the valley below. The name suggests that many people might have died here and no wonder, this place is gifted with vertical slopes and dangerous trenches than any other stretch of Himalayan roads. Nestled amidst beautiful valleys, this place offers an enchanting atmosphere that thrills the visitors.
Some Other Facts About the Suicide Point:
It is located 3 km away from the Kalpa village on a road connecting Kalpa with Roghi. Earlier when I said, the walk to Kalpa is easier than to drive, it is because the road will literally blow the living daylights out of you. So, unless you are an experienced driver, you shouldn’t risk driving here. Undoubtedly, the place is scary but it is BEAUTIFUL and WORTH a visit.
There is no particular time to visit Suicide Point. And in case, you are wondering about the charges to visit, there are absolutely none. It’s free! If you are an adventure lover like me, this place should definitely be in your travel diaries. If you love heights, this place is for you. You are surely going to enjoy your time amidst the striking landscapes of this place in Himachal Pradesh. Suicide Point is counted as one of the most visited destinations in Kalpa.
